A Truly Floriferous Spring

bumble 1

The Crabapples (Malus spp.) have been glorious around town lately. I thought several days of wind, rain, and near-freezing nighttime temps would damage the show, but I was wrong.

The cooler temperatures are holding the blooms and we're having a truly floriferous spring--with one flowering plant upon another building to a crescendo of marvelous scents and sights.

I hadn't even planned to do a post about the Crabapples, but the other day I couldn't resist snapping a few photos.

A neighborhood squirrel flicked me a bouquet.

The bees have been happy, too.

I made a short video with music from a Creative Commons acoustic artist I recently discovered: Jason Shaw. I think I'll buy some his tunes for my regular playlist. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you, Endah! Now our Crabapple in the backyard is blooming. We're so blessed to have three of them in the garden.

    1. Thanks, Lynne. Yeah, I was watching the squirrel scatter around the tree and knocking down little bits. Nature trimming the tree, right? :)

  3. Beautiful photos. When I see a bumble bee working some flowers this spring I will think of this music and your lovely video. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I was happy to come across that artist. The song seemed to fit the video pretty well, and I really like his music.

    1. Ha! Yes, it was so kind of the little critter to send me a bouquet. It's fun to create these little videos--a little time-consuming, but it's easy to get lost in the creativity of it.

  5. Great pics....You really captured the color. I loved the video. There is something so special about fruit tree blossoms! The other day. I was driving and there was a pile of white spent blossoms dancing across the road in the wind...it was magical.

    1. Hi Sally: Thanks! I agree about the fruit-tree blossoms. Usually, they seem to bloom and fade so fast. This year, they're holding on a little longer. And the scent is amazing! The blossoms are now dancing across the roads and gardens here--I agree that is magical, too.

  6. Oh that's fantastic, Beth! I'm so happy to hear that you're enjoying such a cool, comfortable, beautiful and floriferous Spring!!

(And isn't 'floriferous' such a great word anyhow?) :D

    1. Thanks, Aaron. Yes, "floriferous" is fun! Spell-check doesn't like it, but it is a real word. ;-) We had some summer-like weather in March and April, so it's been hard to go back to colder temps (for comfort), but that does help to keep the flowers blooming longer. It's like they're in a fridge. ;-)

  7. Magnificent Spring, aptly presented. I spent the day yesterday weeding, with the bumbles as fuzzy companions.

  8. The trees near us have been stunning. Great weather for them if not always for us.

    1. Yes, I was thinking the same thing. The last two days have been glorious, though, and great for weeding and garden organization, if not planting.

  9. Oh, how wonderful! My apples aren't open yet but I'm relishing all the blooms on my nectarine. It's the first time it's bloomed and we are smitten! Now if only the weather cooperates and doesn't kill them with a frost - fingers crossed that we actually get to taste some nectarines this year.

    1. Wow, a nectarine! I hope you get some fruit this year, too! I didn't realize there were cold-hardy nectarines until you mentioned it and I did a little research. That is awesome! I'll look forward to your posts about it.

  14. Glorious blossom, it could be in Japan in spring. I enjoyed the video, visually and the music. My crabapple is in the process of dropping its leaves.

    1. Hi Karen: I'm sure you've had the Crabapple bloom by now. Has it been a beautiful spring for you, as well? Something about the temperatures (warm-cool-warm-cool) and the abundant rainfall has yielded a rich and full crop of foliage and blooms!

  16. Crabapple time is one of the most magical times of the year! Our blooms are long gone; I often wish I could just freeze time for a while when they do. Enjoyed seeing the bumble enjoying the blooms as well as the music!

    1. Now that I'm catching up with comments, the Crabapple blooms are long gone here, as well. It was lovely while it lasted, but I agree: There are some aspects of spring that I'd like to "freeze" for a little longer.
