In a Vase at Season's End

sea oats

Just a few days before Thanksgiving, a first hard freeze hit our area--very late for Southern Wisconsin. I clipped the last of the garden blooms before it hit and created an arrangement of Zinnias, Marigolds, and Lantanas, with a few spikes of Northern Sea Oats.

For staging, I placed pumpkins and pine cones around the base. (This didn't last long, because the cat tried to chew on the lot.)

The vase was saved one from a previous arrangement, which came with a matching autumnal saucer.

It's fading now, but it sure was nice to have cut flowers from the garden in late November.

I hope all who celebrated had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Blessings as we move through the busy holiday season ahead!

    1. Happy Monday, Lisa. Actually, these were from last week--I'm just getting around to posting the photos now. ;-) But the arrangement is still decent out on the back porch. Crazy weather!

  2. The charming little bouquet of garden flowers yet. For me, I would not do this, because for so long no flowers. Regards.

    1. Thanks, Giga. Yes, this is the last of the blooms from my garden for the season. Winter is too long...

  3. Hi Beth, that is certainly a beautiful autumn arrangement! I am glad that you got the last blooms before the frost hit your area. I especially like the Chasmanthium latifolium in it. Thanks for sharing it!
    Wishing you a lovely week!

    1. Thanks, Christina. Yes, the Northern Sea Oats is a great plant--one of the few native grasses in my area that thrives in shade. And it's great for potted arrangements. I hope you'll have a great week, too!

  4. Beautiful harvest bouquet. We had a freeze here in NC even a bit earlier than you this year.

    1. Thanks! Yes, we've had a mild autumn. I love the warmth, but the foliage colors weren't as vibrant this year. Still, it's nice to see roses, snapdragons, and a few other plants still blooming around the neighborhood.

  5. I managed a bit of foliage for Thanksgiving but nothing as floriferous as your pretty bouquet.

    1. I think this was the end of the blooms. I haven't looked at the garden for a few days (most of the annual flowers are on the side of the house where I don't have a window), but I doubt anything is blooming. Some of the neighbors still have roses and other flowers blooming, though!

  7. It's a perfect autumnal arrangement. I'm surprised by the persistence of zinnias in your garden and my own but then I don't have frost to contend with. The fate of the mini pumpkins made me smile - here, the raccoons carried off 3 of my mini pumpkins (they were outside - no raccoons in the house, thankfully!).

    1. Thank you, Kris! Oh, yes, the Zinnias always last until the first hard freeze. I plant them against a warm wall on the west side of the house, and they usually have a decent growth spurt at the end of the growing season. Crazy raccoons! The cat likes to chew on the flowers and foliage--the pumpkins were safe (inside, anyway). ;-)

  8. The colours were perfect with your pumpkins - Nature is clever to focus on this shade of blooms come late autumn, isn't she? A lovely centrepiece for your Thanksgiving - thanks for sharing

    1. Ah, yes, nature is clever, indeed! Another reason to love Lantanas: The butterflies like them, I like them, and they last from planting through first hard freeze!

    1. The N. Sea Oats are wonderful--I've only had them in my garden for a few years, but they've settled in to a perfect spot ... and they give me vase structure!

  10. What a beautiful arrangement! It certainly is more reminiscent of something you would see on a dining table in October rather than November - what a fall it's been for you!

  11. Beth-your arrangement is so beautiful and festive for the holiday season. The colors are perfect and it is wonderful that you were able to collect the last of blooms in time before the freeze hit. Happy Holidays!

    1. Thanks, Lee. Often for Thanksgiving, the flowers are long-gone, so this was great to have some remaining. I'm a huge fan of blooms with bright, warm colors, and they work well in arrangements the entire growing season. Happy Holidays to you!
